“Fresh air for the soul” - Variety

Agriculture in United States is dominated by single-crop industrial farming: thousands of cows kept on feedlots, endless chickens stored in colossal barns, millions of acres of corn crops sprawling across the American landscape. BIGGEST LITTLE FARM pictures the alternative. What if agriculture didn’t struggle against the natural environment, but rather worked with it to create an organic, sustainable farm in which every animal, insect and plant played an important role? It sounds like a dream, but its reality is anything but.

When cinematographer John Chest and his wife Molly (a food blogger) adopt a rescue dog abandoned by its original owner, they find that their new furry commitment doesn’t quite line up with apartment living in urban Los Angeles. Seizing the opportunity to follow their dream and start an organic farm upstate, John and Molly begin an eight-year journey to rejuvenate an arid plot of land with 200 different crops, 10,000 orchard trees and every farm animal imaginable. However, as their outsized-idealism collide with the merciless realities of farm life, the pair must struggle to maintain their dream of running a sustainable farm in harmony with the natural world.

Charming, inspirational and beautifully-shot, BIGGEST LITTLE FARM wowed critics and audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival with its story of endurance and creativity. Whereas some environmental documentaries that can feel harsh or disheartening, BIGGEST LITTLE FARM brings sustainability down to a local level where real change is possible - if you are prepared to fight for it.
