Reeling from the violence of World War II, the newly-appointed Communist government of Poland sets up a folk music troupe to connect with the traumatised countryside. When musician Wiktor Warski (Tomasz Kot) becomes enamoured by gifted singer Zuzanna "Zula" Lichoń (Joanna Kulig), the two begin a passionate affair in the shadow of the troupe’s growing success. When their differing temperaments and intense political pressures of the time push them apart, their impossible love story follows them to Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris amidst the unfolding crisis of the continental Cold War.

Loosely-based on the lives of his parents, director Paweł Pawlikowski’s COLD WAR follows his Academy Award-winning IDA to critical acclaim, earning him the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes. Anchored by the effortless talents of its stars and the refined storytelling of a cinematic master, COLD WAR is a breathtaking and deeply entertaining work of contemporary filmmaking.

“Pawlikowski is in complete control of the form, but this is no austere piece of work — he even finds time for a few good jokes. Accessible, humane and compassionate: what a treat this is.” - Empire
