This film is nominated for the NETPAC Award for Best Asian-Pacific Film.

A throwback to the classic gangster film genre, GATAO: RISE OF THE KING packs a punch from start to finish! Gang boss Ren has risen the ranks over the years, and is being groomed to take over from the syndicate’s leader one day. Whilst his gang engages in activities such as extortion, money lending, and protection schemes, Ren follows a strict code that disavows any dealings in drug-related activities.

As such, when a former gang brother of Ren’s returns to the Taipei streets after a stint in prison, his new money-making scheme doesn’t sit well with Ren or the old guard. But as he takes over territory at lightning speed, it seems that no one, not even Ren, will stand in his way; setting the stage for an all out war.

An impressive feature-length debut from director Yen Cheng-kuo, beautifully lensed, and featuring an amazing ensemble cast, GATAO rivals the classic gangsters films from 80s and 90s Hong Kong and Japan that we love so much.
