The 2002 documentary SPELLBOUND, changed the way Americans viewed the Scripps National Spelling Bee, reinvigorating national interest in this time honored competition. But no group of people have developed as great a passion for the competition over the past 20 years quite as much as the Indian-American community. Since 1999, 19 of the last 23 national bee winners have been Indian-American, whilst at the same time Indian-American focused spelling bee circuits have popped up just to support the growing interest in the competitions.
BREAKING THE BEE chronicles the ups and downs of four Indian-American students as they compete to realize their dream of winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee and cement their place in the two-decade dynasty of Indian-Americans dominating the iconic competition.
With expert commentary from CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Fareed Zakaria, ESPN's Kevin Negandhi, comedian Hari Kondabolu, 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee winner, Nupur Lala, and others, the film also offers an analysis into the perfect storm of events that contribute to the trend.
